29ers Geared Bikes
29er 1X9 9 Speed
Selecting your crankset is very important to make your 1x9 function correctly without making the whole process of building a 1x9 overwheling. Raceface X-Drive and X-Type cranksets ulitilize spacers to properly position the chainline.
Setting up a 29er to run as a 1x9 is a little different than a traditional geared 29er bike. First off you need to find a good chain guide. I would start off with a MRP 1.X Guide. The MRP 1.X is guide that mounts to the BB and in available in two different sizes; 32-36T and 32-40T.
Chain Guides:Second, a bashguard is a good investment. However, some riders choose not to use bashguards. Make sure you buy a Bash Guard that will cover the teeth on your chain ring. Sizes range from 32T-40T.
Bash Guards:Chain Sizing can be done with warping the Big Cog and Chain ring (Big or the only Chain ring)and then add 2 links. You may have to fine tine if your bike is a full suspension to make sure that in full travel there is enough chain. Closing thoughts. Some say the best setup is an unramped Chainring, outer bash guard, short cage on the derailer, and a N-Gear Jump Start Guide.
